Thomas Tuchel wanted to bring Bruno Fernandes to Paris Saint-Germain – but Manchester United beat them in the race to sign the Portuguese star.

Fernandes has had a transformative effect on United since they bought him from Sporting Lisbon for £47million last January and Tuchel’s Chelsea must keep him quiet on Sunday afternoon.

But the story could have been very different had the German managed to push through a deal for Fernandes during his time in charge of PSG.

Thomas Tuchel has revealed Paris Saint-Germain tried to sign Bruno Fernandes before the Portuguese playmaker joined Manchester United last January

Tuchel, now Chelsea manager, hailed the transformative impact Fernandes has had at United

Tuchel said the French club’s former sporting director Antero Henrique made him aware of the playmaker’s talents and approaches were made.

‘We fought hard to have a connection to him and bring him to our team,’ Tuchel said.

‘I got made aware of him more in detail, so we watched more and more games about him and followed him and tried to be in touch with him to make it happen.

‘Obviously, he decided [to join Man United] and I was never personally in touch with him, but we tried and he went another way. [It is] bad for us that we have to play against him.’

Fernandes, 26, has scored 22 goals and contributed 13 assists in a sensational first full season for United, offering them the brief flicker of a Premier League title challenge as well as keeping their hopes alive in the FA Cup and UEFA Europa League.

He will be key for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side when they head to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

‘The impact he has had since he arrived at Manchester United is indescribable and unbelievable,’ Tuchel added.

‘To come from Portugal, from a competitive team, a big club but not from the strongest league and stepping in a year to one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League and the strongest league in Europe and to have this kind of impact, I have nothing but the biggest respect for this guy.

‘It is outstanding. He is one of the best midfielders in the world, attacking midfielders, and he has a huge, huge impact and to have this as a single person in football, you must be absolutely top level because this is almost impossible.

Tuchel’s Chelsea drew 1-1 with Southampton in their last Premier League game last weekend

‘But he has such a big influence on their game, on their attacking game and that it is a big key to defend against him, to be around him and close to him and he is a key player of Man United in a way that is outstanding.’

Chelsea will move above West Ham and back into the top four if they win on Sunday after the Hammers lost 2-1 at Manchester City on Saturday.
