Ten Hag has three targets after being told to sign next Van Nistlerooy

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews the Fulham win

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag may have listened to a transfer message ahead of the upcoming summer window as plans for next season are being stepped up. The Dutchman was not able to spend as much as he would have liked to in January due to the ongoing takeover of the club, as Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer were brought in on loan to replace the outgoing Cristiano Ronaldo and injured Christian Eriksen.

However, sights are reportedly set on a marquee striker this summer with several names mentioned with moves to Old Trafford. The Red Devils are said to be preparing an £80million bid for England captain Harry Kane, as the Tottenham star has less than 18 months left on his contract and could leave north London.

Kane is of a different mould from former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, but Ten Hag appears to be on the same wavelength as ex-United defender Paul Parker, who insisted that a goalscorer of the Dutchman’s ilk needed to be brought into the team ahead of next season.

“I think United are going to have to do their homework and they’re going to have to find someone who’s got enough drive in them, who wants to score goals, who wants to play for Manchester United, who wants to make his name and become a great for Manchester United,” Parker told Express Sport in the summer, via BeMyBet.

“A bit like a Ruud van Nistelrooy. Ruud van Nistelrooy was known as a goalscorer but he made his name, he established himself when he came to a big club like Manchester United at the time and he made it. Manchester United put him up there in the limelight.”

Kane reportedly makes up one part of the shortlist drawn up by the United chiefs, as Napoli sensation Victor Osimhen has been mentioned with a move to the Premier League via Manchester while Goncalo Ramos of Benfica is also said to be of interest to the club.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli have set their pricetag for Osimhen at £131m, which could be significantly higher than what it would cost to sign Kane.

However, the Nigerian is five years younger than his English counterpart and may still have significant resale value by the end of his first United contract.

The Red Devils will likely have to fork out exponentially to land a top striker this summer, which Ten Hag hopes for before the club’s pre-season tour of the US in July, as Benfica are demanding that Ramos’ £105.6m release clause will have to be triggered in order for the 21-year-old starlet to leave the Portuguese club.
