Nuno Tavares says the Arsenal squad are ‘confident’ about getting all three points from Saturday’s clash away at Liverpool, despite the Gunners’ poor recent record at Anfield.
The last time Arsenal won a Premier League game against the Reds on Merseyside was back in September 2012, when Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla netted in a 2-0 win.
Mikel Arteta was in the starting XI on that day, but this time the Spaniard will have to watch on from the sidelines as his side look to keep up their fine form.
After losing their opening three matches of the campaign, the Gunners have gone eight games unbeaten in the league – including six wins – to move within two points of fourth-placed Liverpool.
And Arsenal left-back Tavares has opened up on the positive mood within the dressing room ahead of this weekend’s crunch game.
‘We are confident about going to Anfield and winning the game with a clean sheet or not,’ Tavares told Sky Sports.
‘We want to win the game and more importantly than a clean sheet, get the three points.
‘Arsenal is a big club with big players. It is normal for us to win games. For us, we want to be in the top one.
‘I don’t know why people are so surprised. People need to understand we are Arsenal and we need to win games to reach our objectives.’
Aaron Ramsdale has impressed for the Gunners since his summer move from Sheffield United.
The goalkeeper has earned widespread praise for his commanding displays, and Tavares thinks he has been vital for Arsenal’s defence.
‘He’s been the most important guy in the defensive unit because he’s helped us so much,’ said the left-back.
‘He’s always talking, helping me stay in the position I need to be in.
‘He’s very strong and when we can’t save something, he’s there always. We are so proud of him.’
‘The whole team likes to defend,’ Tavares added.
‘We are being aggressive with every ball and we don’t like conceding goals. That’s the key to defending well.’
