Steven Gerrard has issued a personal message to Rangers supporters following his abrupt departure for Aston Villa after the Midlands club confirmed the appointment of the Englishman on a three-and-a-half-year contract. The former Ibrox boss has taken to Instagram to address the ‘Gers faithful after deciding to walk away from Glasgow after just over three seasons at the club.

Gerrard arrived in Scotland in the Sumer of 2018 and had two seasons building his title-winning team before guiding his side to glory last season, finishing the league campaign unbeaten.

But now Gerrard has decided to pursue a new opportunity in the form of Villa, who sacked manager Dean Smith last Sunday.

The former Liverpool captain is now hopeful that Rangers supporters can come to terms with his decision over time…

He wrote: “I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone associated with Glasgow Rangers, especially the fans, for the love and support you’ve all shown me during my time in Scotland.

“Winning “55” will always hold a special place in my heart – each and every one of you played a part in that and, believe me, there will be many more to come.

“I hope in time you can understand and accept my decision to move on but I honestly fell in love with the club and will always follow the team. Once a Ranger, always a Ranger #55.”

While the majority of fans in the comments section were quick to share love for Gerrard, others were not so kind.

Things have moved quickly since Villa launched a formal approach earlier this week.

He is understood to have had dinner with the Villa chief last night after the deal had been virtually agreed between Gerrard and the club, including the formalisation of his backroom team.

Gerrard has also provided some clarity of his reasons for joining Aston Villa in his first interview with the club’s website.

“Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football and I am immensely proud to become its new Head Coach,” he said.
