Tottenham are weighing up whether to rival Arsenal in the race for £43m-rated Italy star Manuel Locatelli.
Midfielder Locatelli is set to leave Sassuolo this summer – and the Serie A club claim the Gunners are the only team to so far make a firm bid.
But Spurs are waiting in the wings with Director of Football Fabio Paratici keen to sign players for new boss Nuno Espirito Santo.
The former Wolves manager has been promised money to spend in the transfer market whether or not Harry Kane is sold.
Paratici is a big fan of Locatelli, who also has interest from Juventus.
And he has urged the club to go for him.
But Sassuolo insist Arsenal are currently ahead in the battle to sign the 23-year-old, who has scored two goals for his country at the Euros.
Sporting director Giovanni Carnevali said: “Juventus are the only Italian club we talked to about Locatelli. We will continue these talks.
“It's true that other clubs from abroad are interested.
Should Arsenal go all out to sign Manuel Locatelli? Let us know in the comments section.
Arsenal are one of these and they are ahead of everyone else because they tabled the only concrete offer we have received so far.”
The Gunners hope to wrap up the £27m double signing of Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga this week.
And they are also locked in talks to take England defender Ben White from Brighton in a £50m transfer.
Benfica full-back Tavares is currently in London for his medical ahead of a transfer worth up £10m, and Anderlecht midfielder Lokonga has also agreed terms.
But while Arsenal are also set for a clear-out, they are likely to reject interest from Olympiacos in Reiss Nelson, who has been offered a new contract.
