Solskjaer spots "good sign" in Pogba as he opens up on relationship with star

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was delighted with Paul Pogba's performance in their 5-1 win over Leeds, highlighting the midfielder's fitness as a "good sign".

Solskjaer's men tore the Whites apart in their opening 2021/22 Premier League fixture, with Bruno Fernandes netting a hat-trick at Old Trafford.

Mason Greenwood and Fred also got on the scoresheet, but it was Pogba who will take most of the plaudits for a fine display which saw him register four assists.

Incredibly, the France international has already bettered his assist tally for last season (3) just 90 minutes into the new campaign.

Solskjaer waxed lyrical about his £89million star after the victory, insisting he was particularly impressed with his fitness level.

“I’ve had a great relationship with Paul since he was a kid and today was just about going out and enjoying himself," he said.

"The 45 minutes against Everton weren’t his best but today we gave him the freedom of roaming wherever he wanted to go and to get on the ball.

"I think all the best players want to feel our trust in them and our confidence. Paul is one of them that can create moments out of nothing and is so strong.

"I was impressed by his fitness, so that’s a good sign.”

Solskjaer also heaped praise on United's hat-trick hero, Fernandes, for his strong start to the season.

“He’s a risk taker, he’s always been that," the Norwegian added.

"He’s a Man United player, a forward who has confidence and a little bit of arrogance and takes risks. When you’ve the quality he’s got, plus the players who gave him some decent chances to be fair.”

Next up for United is a trip to Southampton next Sunday.

Solskjaer is already looking ahead to their clash with Saints, saying: “It’s a bit subdued because there’s always a next game.

"It’s a great start and it’s the way I want my team to play. Not because it’s Leeds but I want to see my team running forward, taking risks and we looked fit to be fair. Some of these players haven’t played much in pre-season.”
