Roy Keane’s brutal 2017 criticism of Man Utd target Brendan Rodgers resurfaces

Roy Keane's scathing assessment of Brendan Rodgers in 2017 has resurfaced amid talk of the Leicester boss potentially replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United.

Solskjaer is on thin ice after suffering four defeats in 11 Premier League games this season, the latest coming at home to neighbours Manchester City last weekend.

Another poor result over the next month could force United chiefs to drop the axe, and Daily Star Sport understands Rodgers is their No.1 target.

They are growing increasingly confident of being able to lure the former Liverpool manager to Old Trafford, provided a deal can be struck with current club Leicester.

But ahead of Rodgers' potential appointment, Keane's brutal criticism of the Northern Irishman during his time at Celtic is now doing the rounds again.

Back in December 2017 the Hoops, whom Rodgers guided to two Scottish Premiership titles before heading back to England with Leicester, slumped to a 1-0 home defeat against Anderlecht in the Champions League.

Despite the loss and their exit from Europe's elite-level competition at the group stage, Rodgers heaped praise on his team for securing qualification to the Europa League, saying: “We've done that having been the fourth seed in the group – it's a great testament to the actual players getting through.”

However, as usual Keane pulled no punches in his stinging review of the Celtic boss at the time.

“Really, I thought it was a shocking result, really poor performance," the United legend said.

“Brendan's talking there about it being a great achievement.

“I think the key to management nowadays is to set your standards really, really low and you'll be in the game for a long time.

“It's just not acceptable for Celtic, it really isn't. Losing at home to Anderlecht, come on, give me a break.”

Keane added: “You talk about them learning, but from looking at Celtic over the last one or two years in Europe, they’re not learning.

“They’re making exactly the same mistakes against top opposition.

“To me, they’re not learning.”
