Ronaldo rejects contract offer worth £233m despite pushing for Man Utd exit

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly rejected a mammoth contract offer worth £233million despite wanting out of Manchester United.

Already well into the twilight years of his career, Ronaldo, 37, is desperate to secure an exit from Old Trafford this summer to continue making his mark in the Champions League. And it's that desire which has seen him turn down an eye-watering deal in the Middle East with one Saudi Arabian club offering a £2.24million-a-week contract.

Quadrupling his current terms at Man Utd, the Saudi outfit had hoped a lucrative offer would sway his mind but the Portuguese icon is motivated to challenge himself against Europe's most elite for the 20th consecutive season.

The unnamed club were also willing to stump up a £25m transfer fee, doubling the £12.5m United forked out to bring him back to Old Trafford last summer. Though, despite the failed pursuit, Ronaldo will not be linking up with his team-mates for their final pre-season matches in Australia and continues to remain at home for "family reasons".

Super-agent Jorge Mendes is working round the clock to secure Ronaldo's next club but a move to a Champions League outfit is looking less and less likely. Barcelona, Chelsea and Bayern Munich have all held preliminary discussions with Mendes but all three have reservations over the 37-year-old.

Cash-strapped Barcelona are unable to afford his mega-money wages and only still only entertain a switch should they fail in their pursuit of Robert Lewandowski. Bayern though are growing increasingly confident of retaining their star man due to La Bluagrana's poor finances and have no space for Ronaldo in their frontline.

Chelsea was deemed the most likely destination for Ronaldo due to Todd Boehly's assistance for a marquee signing but the arrival of Raheem Sterling has lessened the pressure on the American's shoulders and the Blues have now ruled themselves out of a deal for the Portuguese icon.
