Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has slammed Manchester City's defending for Chelsea's opener in the Champions League final.

Kai Havertz put Thomas Tuchel's side ahead in Porto, latching on to Mason Mount's pass before taking it past Ederson and slotting home.

Havertz appeared to have plenty of space to saunter through the middle of City's defence before collecting the pass.

And Ferdinand criticised the defending from City ace Oleksandr Zinchenko as the Ukrainian did not get goal side of Havertz.

Speaking at half-time on BT Sport, Ferdinand said: "Great touch from Chilwell, great run from Havertz, but the ball from Mason Mount was absolutely on the money.

"Zinchenko has to go with him here. He’s at the bottom of the picture here (analysing the goal). It’s lazy defending, go with your man!

"If he stands in there and marks him, that ball doesn’t get played by Mason Mount."

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton suggested the area behind the City defence was the reason for the goal.

He said on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was the space in behind for Chelsea.

"Kai Havertz ran from the right, inside Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ederson comes rushing out but he has the easiest chances to finish it off.

"Chelsea have deserved this, they have had the better chances and been the bigger threat.

"Now Manchester City have to respond."
