Rio Ferdinand explains why Arsenal should give up trying to sign Luka Jovic

Rio Ferdinand believes Arsenal would be unwise to move for Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic, as he believes the Gunners’ problems lie in other areas of the pitch.

Reports linking Jovic with a move to the Emirates Stadium emerged on Sunday with the Serbian’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu in doubt after a torrid season.

Jovic moved to the Spanish giants last summer after scoring 27 goals in a fantastic campaign with Eintracht Frankfurt.

But the 22-year-old has failed to live up to his €60m price tag yet – scoring only twice for Los Blancos – and could be set for a premature departure from Real, with Arsenal monitoring the situation.

However, Ferdinand believes the Gunners would be investing in the wrong area of the pitch if they bought a forward.

“He is someone who could add something to Arsenal but I don't think Arsenal need a player in that position,” he told fans during an Instagram Live video.

“Arsenal need centre-halves. They need centre-halves who can defend and play as well. I played against Arsenal teams with the likes of Sol Campbell and Tony Adams.

"I don't see that now. They have many good footballers but you need a blend.
