Rice and Johnson’s "perfect" West Ham interview lauded as "breath of fresh air"

Fans have lauded Declan Rice and Ben Johnson's post-match interview as a "breath of fresh air" following West Ham United's 4-1 win over Aston Villa.

Both players scored as the Hammers continued their impressive form away to Villa on Sunday, as they pulled level on points with third placed Manchester City.

After the match, the players, who are both West Ham academy graduates, were interviewed together by Sky Sports, with Rice admitting he felt they had been sloppy.

Rice explained: “We were so sloppy in the second half. I know the manager won’t be happy about that even though won four goals to one.”

He then went on to reflect on his goal as he added: “That feeling of scoring a goal doesn’t get any better, it’s special to score.”

The West Ham fans loved Rice and Johnson's interview as the pair spoke openly about their performance with beaming smiles across their faces.

One fan tweeted: “The smiles on Johnson and Rice's faces are exactly what football is all about, two homegrown lads getting rewarded for their hard work and enjoying playing for their club!”

While another fan praised them as they wrote: “Declan Rice seems like a good lad, Ben Johnson also seems lovely”

A third supporter tweeted: “Great interview with Rice and Johnson just then on Sky shows exactly the bond and spirit and fight you should have as a team, no better sport is there?”

Another fan compared the interview to the media appearances of the Manchester United players following their 5-0 loss to Liverpool last weekend.

“That interview with Rice & Johnson was a breath of fresh air compared to Maguire and Co. from this time last week," they wrote.

Meanwhile, another hailed the interview as perfect, tweeting: “That interview from Declan Rice and Ben Johnson was perfect.”

Another Hammers fan revealed the interview made them proud to support their club as they wrote: “That Ben Johnson and Declan Rice interview epitomises why I’m proud to be a West Ham fan. What a club we are, nothing comes close.”

David Moyes will hope that his side can continue their strong start to the season as they aim for a fourth win from four away to Genk in the Europa League on Thursday.

West Ham then host Liverpool at the London Stadium in the league next Sunday.
