Marcus Rashford has passed on his best wishes to Donny van de Beek and urged the Manchester United midfielder to keep his ‘head high’ after he was ruled out of the Netherlands’ European Championships campaign.

Van de Beek was included in Frank de Boer’s initial 26-man party for the tournament but the 24-year-old did not appear in either of the Netherlands’ warm-up games with Scotland and Georgia and officially withdrew from the squad due to a groin injury on Tuesday morning.

It’s yet another devastating setback for the Dutchman who made just four starts across a miserable debut season in the Premier League after swapping Ajax for Old Trafford last summer.

It’s been confirmed that De Boer will not be calling up a replacement for Van de Beek.

‘Donny van de Beek has to let the European championship pass by. The Manchester United midfielder is struggling with an injury, a statement from KNVB said.

‘As a result, the 19-time international, who last played minutes in Orange in March during Gibraltar – Netherlands (0-7), is not available in time for the European Championship.

‘National head coach Frank de Boer does not call for a replacement for Van de Beek.’

Messages of support immediately began flooding in for Van de Beek and Rashford was among those to reach out with a few kind words on his official Twitter page.

The United and England forward tweeted: ‘[heartbreak emoji] sorry mate @Donny_beek6 take some time for yourself and keep your head high x’

‘A club like Borussia Dortmund would have been a better step for him. Manchester United might be a step too far for him.’
