Pochettino fumes at referee as he blames "big mistake" for PSG’s collapse

Mauricio Pochettino blasted referee Danny Makkelie as he blamed the Dutch official for making a “big mistake” that led to PSG’s remarkable collapse against Real Madrid.

Kylian Mbappe had seemingly secured the French side’s place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a first-half strike.

But as has so often happened in European football’s premier club competition, Los Blancos staged a stunning comeback to break PSG hearts, though it was a comeback all of the Ligue 1 side’s making.

First, Karim Benzema pressured Gianluigi Donnarumma into passing the ball straight to Vinicius, who laid the ball back to the striker to fire in.

Then, Luka Modric burst through a wide-open PSG midfield before slipping in an unmarked Benzema to level the game.

Straight from PSG’s kick-off after that goal, Madrid won the ball before Marquinhos sent a poor clearance directly to Benzema who completed his hat-trick with a first-time finish.

Even by PSG’s standards it was an astonishing collapse, but rather than blame his players, Pochettino launched a scathing attack on Makkelie.

The Argentine boss felt there was a foul in the build-up to Benzema’s opening goal, a strike Pochettino insisted “changed the game”.

“It's impossible not to talk about this big mistake made by the referees. It's hard not to accept. [… ] It's incredible that this is happening in 2022,” he told Canal+.

“Real's first goal changed the match. I wonder what the VAR is doing because for me there is something else.

“It's a shame, when you see the action, there a foul. After that, the match changed. For 60 minutes we dominated, that goal changed everything.

“We were the best team over the two games. Football is about managing match moments well. It’s true that we’ve collapsed a bit. It’s impossible to explain.

“It’s incredible that the foul on Donnarumma wasn’t looked over by VAR. It’s a very clear foul from Benzema for me.

“Every angle shows that it was a foul. I don’t understand why VAR wasn’t used at that moment.”

Pochettino is now under serious pressure of being sacked, with PSG having failed to progress past the semi-finals of the Champions League in either of his two seasons as manager.
