Nice and Marseille shared the points in a 1-1 draw in their Ligue 1 rematch after fan trouble saw their original game in August abandoned.

Last month’s encounter was abandoned after Nice supporters threw missiles at players on the pitch, sparking violent brawls between both sets of players, fans and staff members.

The rematch had to be played in a neutral venue in front of no supporters in Troyes, with Dimitri Payet – who was at the centre of their trouble that marred their original game, scoring to cancel out Amine Gouiri’s early opener.

The original match in August between the teams was abandoned after an ugly on-pitch brawl

The result means Nice and Marseille remain in third and fourth place respectively, with the ‘home’, side now eight points behind Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

In the original match, former West Ham star Payet was hit on the back by a bottle thrown from an area with Nice fans towards the end of the game as the Marseille man rolled on the floor before returning to his feet to angrily throw it back into the stands.

The incident saw a number of Nice fans, who had earlier been warned against throwing objects by the stadium announcer, rush the pitch to confront Payet, with footage showing Marseille physio Pablo Fernandez punch a pitch invader to the floor during the ugly scenes.

With a large number of fans spilling onto the pitch, the referee suspended the match while Marseille players stepped into to intervene, confronting the furious Nice supporters.

Ligue 1 docked Nice two points for the incident, one of which has been suspended, and banned Fernandez for the remainder of the 2021-22 season.

But there were no unsavoury scenes in the return leg as Gouiri tapped home Evann Guessand’s cross after a brilliant solo run from the Nice forward after just six minutes.

Nice thought they would hold onto their lead going into half-time but with three minutes of the first period remaining, Payet finished off a team move Arkadiusz Milik and Gerson to crash home a leveller.

Payet then equalised for OM to keep them in the top four, nine points behind leaders PSG
