Newcastle United have enquired about signing Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu on loan for the 2021-2022 season.

The 20-year-old is expected to leave Stamford Bridge in the next two weeks after failing to make Thomas Tuchel’s squad for Chelsea’s opening game of the season against Crystal Palace.

Ampadu – who was part of the Wales squad that made the knockout stages of Euro 2020 – previously told Chelsea that he wanted to play ‘regular football’ to achieve his ‘dreams’.

Therefore, according to the Northern Echo, Tuchel will be open to letting Ampadu leave on a season-long loan deal as he looks to get more first-team minutes under his belt.

Newcastle could be Ampadu’s likely destination as the Magpies boss Steve Bruce regards him as a valuable addition to his defensive line.

Bruce also missed out on the chance to sign Axel Tuanzebe, who signed for Aston Villa on loan following the arrival of Raphael Varane at Manchester United.

Therefore, the Newcastle United manager is eager to acquire Ampadu’s services for the 2021-2022 campaign.

However, he has only made 12 senior appearances for Chelsea since arriving in 2017

Ampadu joined the Blues from boyhood club Exeter City in 2017 and has since made 12 senior appearances.

He also spent last season on loan with Sheffield United – playing in all three positions along the back, as well as in midfield.

Ampadu described his experience with the Blades as a ‘learning curve’ having made 29 appearances in all competitions as the club were relegated from the Premier League.
