Newcastle ‘in the mix for Aubameyang’ and outcast has January preference

Newcastle are reportedly 'in the mix' for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang though the frozen-out Arsenal forward is believed to be eyeing up a different destination.

The Gabonese Gunner looks set to depart the Emirates in the January transfer window having been stripped of captaincy by manager Mikel Arteta and banished from the team.

The 32-year-old is being punished for a disciplinary breach having reportedly returned late from a trip abroad, his second count of misconduct this year.

With Arsenal keen to offload the striker, a Premier League rival have now joined the list of supposed suitors as the race for the attacker's signature heats up.

According to SPORT, recently bankrolled Newcastle are one of a number of clubs looking to take Aubameyang off of Arteta's hands, but the Arsenal outcast is believed to have a different destination in mind.

Reports in Spain suggest Barcelona are Aubameyang's preferred choice, with Lyon and Juventus two other clubs who have reportedly taken a liking to the prospect of signing the striker.

It remains to be seen whether the cash-strapped Catalan club will pursue a deal for Aubameyang with the arrival of Manchester City forward Ferran Torres set to be announced by the La Liga giants imminently.

Barcelona's desire for new attacking options has been well-documented with a lack of goals being compounded by the recent news that summer recruit Sergio Aguero has been forced into an early retirement following heart complications.

The Blaugrana only mustered two strikes as they crashed out of the Champions league group stages for the first time in 20 years earlier this month, and have managed 29 goals in the league – a whopping 12 fewer than table-toppers Real Madrid.

Manchester United's Edinson Cavani appears to be the preferred centre-forward option being tipped to join Xavi's men, but with Aubameyang's availability having changed in recent weeks, Barcelona could well consider granting the Arsenal man his wish by bringing him to the Nou Camp.
