Gary Neville has been called out by Jamie Carragher after the two pundits engaged in an entertaining bickering match on Twitter once again on Sunday. The Manchester United icon defended himself on social media from Liverpool hero Carragher after his Sky Sports colleague reminded him of his views regarding Jose Mourinho in an argument relating to under-fire Tottenham boss Antonio Conte.

Conte hit the headlines on Saturday for his extraordinary rant about his Tottenham side, with Neville suggesting that the Italian should be made to stay in his job after he was accused of trying to get himself sacked following the 3-3 draw with Southampton.

Neville had opposed United hiring Conte to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November 2021 and the club ultimately decided to bring in Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis before appointing Erik ten Hag in June.

And with Conte now on the brink of leaving Spurs just 16 months into his reign, the Red Devils hero reminded his followers of his opinions at the time and how the likes of Carragher criticised him.

When asked if he recalled the debate and how he was criticised by his colleagues for giving his opinion at the time, Neville responded “Oh I do I do”. However, Carragher reminded him of his support for Mauricio Pochettino as Solskjaer’s replacement as opposed to Ten Hag as the debate began to gather momentum.

“Yes you’d rather have kept that serial winner Ole! Then you wanted Poch not ETH, I told you ETH was the better choice but you wouldn’t listen,” Carragher tweeted. Neville hit back, replying: “Oh but we would have had what you and loads of United fans wanted. By the way ETH is fantastic but Poch is a great manager and would have been a lot better for United than your choice!!!”

When asked separately by another fan if Pochettino would have been a successful hire at Old Trafford, Neville maintained his backing for the Argentine and said: “Either were good fits. Conte was never a fit for United.”

Carragher caught wind of Neville’s explanation for snubbing Conte and decided not to let his comments slide, questioning why he would back the appointment of Jose Mourinho in July 2016 and oppose Conte coming to the club when they were similar managers.

He wrote: “So why did you champion the appointment of Jose and argue he wasn’t supported after spending 100’s millions & attacking the club?? They are exactly the same type of managers!”

But Neville explained the hostile nature of Mourinho’s time in charge meant he wanted a different boss in charge, and the ex-defender quickly attempted to change the subject.

He tweeted: “And after that experience I didn’t want to go there again! Even though he won trophies!! You did. For the worst United takes we need to look at yours on Rashford, Martinez and Conte!!”

Football fans clearly enjoyed watching the petty argument unfold on Twitter, which threatened to turn sour as Carragher took shots at Neville’s management of League Two outfit Salford City.

But the pair managed to keep it clean and it will be interesting to see if sparks fly again in the Sky Sports studio on Sunday.
