Michael Owen may be right about Elanga with Man Utd ‘ready to sell for £10m’

Michael Owen may be proven right about Anthony Elanga after Manchester United halved their asking price for the winger. It is reported the Sweden international will be allowed to leave Old Trafford for just £10million this summer.

Elanga made just five starts in the Premier League in Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge. All of those came in the first half of the campaign, with the 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Charlton in January his only start in 2023 so far.

The 20-year-old has fallen well down the pecking order, with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Facundo Pellistri has also been given an opportunity by Ten Hag in recent months, while Amad will be back in the first-team setup following his loan at Sunderland. The Manchester Evening News claims United initially thought about loaning Elanga next season.

However, the decision has now been made to sell him for just £10m, half their original asking price. Elanga came through the academy at United and has four goals and four assists in 55 senior appearances.

But it appears his time at the club could be coming to an end. Former Red Devils striker Owen is set to be proven right after claiming last year that Elanga was not at the level required to lead United back to glory.

Speaking in February 2022, Owen said on BT Sport: “He’s made a difference when he’s come on. If I saw him playing for any other team I’d say, ‘yeah, this kid’s got something and he’s going to be a good player’.

“But when I see them coming through Manchester United they have to be special, special. They have to be world class.

“Is Elanga and players like that going to take you to the league title or win the Champions League? Are they like Ryan Giggs or Wayne Rooney coming through?

“He’s a very, very good player, but if I’m being brutally honest, if you’re asking me what I think of him, I think he’ll have a fantastic career, but he’ll do very, very well to be a Ryan Giggs or a Wayne Rooney.

“I know that’s comparing [Elanga to club legends], but that’s what Manchester United are. That’s what they’re aspiring to be, [what] they were and they’ve got to get back to that.

“If you’ve not got that absolute freakish talent, you’re not really going to be the right… we’ve just spoken about Marcus Rashford – he’s a phenomenal player – he’s got to find another level.”
