Lionel Messi was welcomed to Paris by thousands of screaming fans after touching down in the French capital to seal his stunning switch to PSG.

The Ballon d'Or legend waved an emotional goodbye to Barcelona at the weekend, having failed to reach an agreement over a new contract with Catalans chiefs.

When Barca confirmed their star man would be leaving last Thursday PSG moved quickly to secure his signature, with Mauricio Pochettino contacting his fellow Argentinian to make his pitch the following day.

Over the weekend Messi's representatives have been thrashing out terms with PSG officials, and after finally making the breakthrough on Tuesday the player jetted out to Paris.

Upon arrival in the city Messi was greeted by thousands of PSG supporters desperate to catch a glimpse of their marquee signing in the flesh.

He waved to them from an airport window while wearing a Paris t-shirt.

Messi is now set to undergo a medical at the Parc des Princes before putting pen to paper on a two-year contract worth a reported £27million per year.

That deal will also include the option of a further 12 months should both parties choose to trigger the clause.

Mundo Deportivo claimed negotiations over Messi's wages and image rights were the only two obstacles standing in the way of his transfer before a full agreement was finally reached on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old is the latest high-profile free signing for Pochettino, who has also added Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum and Gianluigi Donnarumma to his squad without paying a single penny in transfer fees.

Should it prove their final recruit of the summer they have certainly saved the best until last, with Messi's legacy as one of the greatest players in football history already cemented.

He bagged an eye-watering 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barca, lifting 35 major trophies with the club and winning a record six Ballon d'Or awards.
