Matthijs de Ligt has become unhappy at Juventus and is seeking a move away from the Italian club this summer. De Ligt signed for the Serie A side in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £67.5million, having previously impressed at Ajax.

The Dutch defender was part of the Ajax side that reached the 2018/19 Champions League semi-final and attracted widespread interest for his performances, along with teammate Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong completed a move to Barcelona in January 2019 and it has now emerged that this is a transfer De Ligt wishes he had also made.

According to Spanish publication Sport, the 21-year-old ‘regrets’ his decision to turn down the La Liga side and a transfer to the club would be of ‘most interest’.

Barcelona’s poor financial situation could prove to be stumbling block in agreeing a transfer deal, though the Spanish giants ‘will try to do everything possible’ to sign the Netherlands international if there is a realistic chance of securing his services.

One way this could be achieved is through a swap deal – something the two clubs experimented with last summer.

Barcelona recruited midfielder Miralem Pjanic last June, with Brazilian star Arthur heading in the opposite direction as part of the agreement.

It’s clear that Ronald Koeman’s side are not prepared to spend big this summer, as shown by the club’s early transfer business.

Sergio Aguero, Georginio Wijnaldum, Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia are all expected to join the club in the coming weeks, though all four players will arrive on free transfers.

One factor that could work in the favour of Barcelona, however, is the relationship between club president Joan Laporta and De Ligt’s agent Mino Raiola. It’s believed that the pair share a good understanding, which could certainly prove decisive regarding negotiations.

De Ligt is not the only player expected to leave Juventus this summer as Andrea Pirlo’s side face a rebuild.

The Old Lady endured an extremely disappointing campaign in Serie A, sneaking into fourth spot on the final day.

De Ligt may now be questioning choosing the Italian side back in 2019, but explained the reasoning behind his decision in an interview last year.

“I had offers last summer from Juventus, PSG and Barcelona, so I studied the various options and at the end of the day concluded I could grow faster at Juve,” he told Ziggo Sport.

“They have a particular style and I knew being here would make me a more complete player.”
