Marcus Rashford sends message to MPs declaring "this was never about me or you"

Marcus Rashford has sent an impassioned message to all MPs declaring "this was never about me or you" following the Government U-turn on providing free school meals to vulnerable children.

The Man Utd and England striker has been campaigning vehemently to persuade the Department of Education to reverse their decision not to supply meals throughout the summer holidays.

After his initial pleas were knocked back, the Government eventually bowed to public pressure on Tuesday, announcing a £120million 'Covid summer food fund'.

Rashford, 22, was overjoyed at the response, and said: "Just look at what we can do when we come together," before addressing MPs across the country with his latest tweet.

He wrote: "This was never about me or you, this was never about politics, this was a cry out for help from vulnerable parents all over the country and I simply provided a platform for their voices to be heard.

"I stand proud today knowing that we have listened, and we have done what is right.

"There is still a long way to go but I am thankful to you all that we have given these families just one less thing to worry about tonight.

"The wellbeing of our children should ALWAYS be a priority."

Rashford himself came from a family of five children and revealed his similarly disadvantaged background provided motivation to help those less fortunate.

He has been working tirelessly alongside charity Fare Share throughout lockdown, raising more than £20million to provide over three million meals for children nationwide.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan described Rashford as a "hero and an inspiration" for his efforts, while there have been calls for the forward to be knighted.
