Manchester United have reportedly abandoned their pursuit of Declan Rice to focus on Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips instead. The England international flourished at Euro 2020 back in the summer. And he’s not Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s only transfer target for 12 months’ time, either.

According to the Daily Star, United are interested in signing Phillips next summer.

They had originally eyed Rice, who has dazzled for West Ham in recent years.

But with the Hammers poised to demand £100million for their prized asset, they’re now looking at alternatives.

Phillips is one player under consideration, having impressed for Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa ever since their promotion to the Premier League.

He was also part of the England side that made the final of Euro 2020, where they lost to Italy back in July.

So Express Sport will now take a look at how United may line up if they sign Phillips, Kieran Trippier and Erling Haaland.

Goalkeeper: De Gea

The goalkeeping issue at United has gone on for a couple of years now.

It appeared as though Dean Henderson would be their No 1 at the end of last season but, since then, things have changed.

United have been erratic so far this season but David De Gea, after a spell of inconsistency, appears to be back to his best.

The Spain international has stood out against the likes of Southampton, Wolves and West Ham in the Premier League so far this term.

So De Gea, if he continues like this, will hold onto his No 1 jersey.

Defence: Trippier, Varane, Maguire, Shaw

United have seen Aaron Wan-Bissaka struggle early on, with the former Crystal Palace star’s weaknesses in attack clear for all to see.

So, therefore, it’s possible they’ll go back in for Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier.

United were keen on the England international in the summer, only to end up prioritising other areas instead.

And it’s feasible they’ll renew their interest in the former Tottenham star given Wan-Bissaka’s current problems.

If that happens, he can expect to feature alongside Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw at the back.

Midfield: Phillips, Pogba, Fernandes

Part of the reason United are using Paul Pogba out wide is because they lack the muscle in midfield to provide him with protection in that area.

Yet if they sign Phillips from Leeds, that could change.

It’s easy to imagine him walking into this United side ahead of the likes of Scott McTominay and Fred.

And his potential arrival could pave the way for the Red Devils to be more gung-ho.

Pogba and Bruno Fernandes may be deployed in attacking midfield areas, giving United a more attacking edge in the process.

Forwards: Sancho, Haaland, Ronaldo

While United want to sign a defensive midfielder next term, they also want Haaland.

That stance hasn’t changed despite recently re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo, 12 years after he left for Real Madrid.

So if they sign Haaland, he can expect to be unleashed in the No 9 role.

Jadon Sancho could be used on the opposite flank, where he previously sparkled for Borussia Dortmund over in Germany.

And Ronaldo may then be used out wide, just as he was during his time at Juventus prior to his return to Old Trafford.
