Manchester United retain transfer interest in Ruben Neves as the August 31 deadline begins to tick down. The Portugal international has been a consistent performer for Wolves over the past four years. And Bruno Fernandes has already supposedly approved a deal for his compatriot.

According to 90min, United want to sign Neves with Wolves slapping a £40million price tag on the player.

Though they’ve spent the majority of their summer transfer budget already, on the likes of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, they’re still aiming to add to their squad.

United have been linked with Eduardo Camavinga and Saul Niguez, of Rennes and Atletico Madrid respectively.

But, at present, it’s Neves who appears to be their chosen signing.

United are planning on being more attacking this term, craving the arrival of an anchorman to allow Fernandes and Paul Pogba to shine in the attacking positions.

And it’s already been claimed that Fernandes approves of Neves’ signing, with Eurosport’s Dean Jones saying as much in July.

Speaking on The Football Terrace at the time, he said: “That final position will be in midfield.

“It’s just a case of is it Ruben Neves? Is it a defensive midfielder? It’s all going to depend and it would really give us an insight into what Solskjaer’s mentality is going into the season and what type of football we can expect from him.

“Is he sticking with that McTominay and Fred? Or is he going to be more open than that, with a ball-player like Neves that can come in.

“I’m told that the Neves pursuit is genuine. And while Arsenal are the most active in trying to get that over the line, United are still in the conversation.

“Bruno Fernandes is obviously very keen for Neves to join and the club are aware of that.”

As one of United’s best players, keeping Fernandes happy is vital.

And that’s particularly important because of his contract situation, with the Red Devils already looking to negotiate a new deal.

Fernandes is contracted to the club until 2025 but the Red Devils want to up his salary to put him amongst their highest earners.

And signing close friend Neves would be one way of ensuring he stays in a positive mood ahead of potential negotiations.

United have had a good track record with Portuguese players in the past, Joel Pereira and Bebe aside.

Cristiano Ronaldo was a huge hit during his six years at Old Trafford, firing the club to three Premier League titles on the spin.

Nani was also a success, even if he sometimes struggled to emerge from Ronaldo’s shadow.

And Fernandes himself has been nothing short of extraordinary since moving to the club from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020.

Speaking on Friday, meanwhile, Wolves boss Bruno Lage opened up on Neves.

And he admitted that, though they want to keep hold of their prized asset, every player has a price.

“All the top players we have are linked with all the clubs in the world,” he said.

“If you go to Portugal, the top players at Benfica are all linked with moves to Wolves.

“Ruben is happy here and we are happy with him. We are not thinking to let anyone leave, but every player has a price.

“You never know, if Messi changes to PSG then anyone can go.”

When quizzed on if they’d received an offer for Neves, he then added: “Real proposals? Not yet.”
