Manchester United reportedly refused Paul Pogba’s request to sign a new deal at the club in 2019.
The France midfielder’s current contract at Old Trafford expires next summer, meaning he will be able to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season if a new contract is not signed.
It has been an untidy contract saga prompting countless stories and speculation about the midfielder’s future as well as his relationship with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
United legend Paul Scholes even suggested the midfielder was “almost holding the club to ransom” after he was sent off in their 5-0 humiliation against Liverpool.
However, the Daily Mail claims Pogba insinuated to United he was open to committing his future at Old Trafford in 2019.
The former Juventus star, who returned to the club for a then world record £89m fee in 2016, reportedly prioritised signing a new deal less than one year after he won the World Cup with France.
His influence in Les Bleus triumph in Russia resulted in many clubs around Europe courting him, but he wanted to stay in the red half of Manchester.

However, the Reds are believed to have only decided to trigger a one-year contract extension on his initial deal, instead of offering him a more permanent new contract.
It is understood Pogba’s camp are confused as to why there are suggestions he is trying to run his contract down and leave on a free transfer, when they feel it was them who made the first move.
These presentations of Pogba have also irritated his camp who feel he is being made to look like the antagonist in this sage.
The 28-year-old is still reportedly open to signing a new deal, due to the arsenal of talent amassed in the last couple of seasons.
Since the club enacted the one-year extension in 2020, they are believed to have only made one formal extension offer to Pogba.
It is believed the United star informed the club he did not wish to sign that specific deal and is waiting for another offer.
