Man Utd’s new definition of success worries Berbatov while Liverpool flourish

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has claimed the club should not view finishing in the top four a success, with rivals Liverpool dominating last season.

United have not had a good start to the season, losing their opening league game 3-1 to Crystal Palace and scraping a 3-2 win over Brighton on Saturday thanks to a late penalty awarded after the final whistle had been blown.

They enjoyed a good end to last season, going unbeaten in the league post-lockdown but Berbatov believes Jurgen Klopp's men are the best team in the world right now and United need to "try and catch up to Liverpool".

In an interview with talkSPORT, Berbatov was asked if he felt United were making progress under Solskjaer and responded: "Probably small steps.

"Which sounds really ironic, funny, sarcastic if you want because not long ago United were always considered the team who were going to be at the top.

"Now it's a bit like, 'can we qualify for the top four?' This is now considered a success and it shouldn't be like this.

"But now times are different and Liverpool is the team that is dictating the tempo in the Premier League and in Europe as well.

"If United want to develop and get better they need to try and catch up to Liverpool because at the moment they are producing the best football."

Berbatov was also asked about this season's title race and he believes Liverpool are strong favourites.

"Liverpool is up there if they continue the way they are playing," Berbatov said. "And now with Thiago coming in they are going to become even better as a team with creativity. They are the team you should watch out for."
