Manchester United are reportedly set to receive a transfer windfall if Romelu Lukaku joins Premier League rivals Chelsea.
Chelsea are keen on Lukaku as boss Thomas Tuchel targets a top-class centre-forward, with Borussia Dortmund seemingly unwilling to sell Erling Haaland.
The Champions League winners have been given hope they can land Lukaku from Inter Milan for around £100m – and United would stand to take a cut.
Inter are in financial difficulties and need to sell at least one big player before the transfer window shuts, according to The Telegraph.
The Serie A giants would prefer to sell Lautaro Martinez, who is on Arsenal's radar – but so far Chelsea are the only team willing to stump up the cash as they chase Lukaku.
And United could benefit by nearly €5m if Tuchel lands the former Red Devils striker.
When United sold Lukaku to Inter for £74m in 2019, they had a sell-on clause inserted that would see them rake in four or five per cent of any future sale fee.
If Chelsea were to strike a deal with Inter for €120m (£102m), that would net Solskjaer's side around €4.8million (£4m).
The Italians have insisted Lukaku is not for sale, and Chelsea have reportedly offered Inter £100million plus Marcos Alonso for the Belgian striker, but saw the proposal rejected.
Inter CEO Beppe Marotta told Sportmediaset last week that the 28-year-old's future remains in Milan.
"From our side, we can yes absolutely, Lukaku is not for sale. Lukaku is an important piece on the chessboard available to Simone Inzaghi,” he said.
According to FC Inter News, Lukaku himself has claimed he is happy in Italy and has ‘declined any invitation to leave’.
But the publication claims Chelsea owner Roman Roman Abramovich ‘firmly believes’ the striker can be tempted back to Stamford Bridge.
Lukaku joined Chelsea in 2011 and was loaned out to West Brom and Everton, later joining The Toffees permanently before a £76m move to United in 2017.
