Manchester United are reportedly prepared to let Donny van de Beek leave the club before the transfer deadline, just one year after signing him from Ajax. The Dutchman’s spell at Old Trafford has been hugely underwhelming, and boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could yet decide that now is the right time to cut their losses and move on.
Recruited from Ajax last summer, Van de Beek arrived in Manchester with a big reputation and a £40million price-tag.
Through very little fault of his own, he has failed to establish himself in red due to the overwhelming success of fellow attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
Working on limited minutes and starting on the bench the vast majority of the time, the 24-year-old has failed to grasp the scarce opportunities given to him.
As a result, Fabrizio Romano now claims that the Red Devils could be preparing to sanction a departure before the window slams shut.

The arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, although not directly in his preferred position of attacking midfield, could also worry him as spots in attack become even more competitive.
Having shown so much promise in the Eredivisie and for the Dutch national team, the all-round midfielder is likely to have plenty of suitors willing to take a punt on him.
Still in his early-twenties, Van de Beek has time to get his career back on track after being somewhat derailed during his 12 months at Old Trafford.
From United’s perspective, the fact that they have spent well over £100m this summer and not made any money in return could become a concern.

With the likes of Jesse Lingard and Van de Beek linked to moves away, pressure could soon mount on Solskjaer to cash in as the deadline looms.
If they could recoup a sizable fee for the Dutchman, however, it could reignite their interest in Wolves’ midfield general, Ruben Neves.
The Portuguese was at the centre of the post-game controversy after United took all three points from Molineux on Sunday, after being on the receiving end of a questionable Paul Pogba tackle in the build-up to Mason Greenwood’s winner.
Still, Wolves battled hard against the Red Devils, and Neves’ impressive performance could spur Solskjaer into action one last time this summer.
The 24-year-old is also better suited to what United need at present – a midfielder more comfortable in a holding role, whereas Van de Beek prefers to attack.
If the Red Devils are to have any chance of making that happen, offloading Van de Beek would surely be a pre-requisite.
As the transfer window remains open for less than 48 hours, Solskjaer and co. will have to act quickly to get one out, followed by one in.
