Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his backroom staff want Anthony Martial to ‘fight’ for a starting position this season, after growing ‘frustrated’ by his lack of progress last term.
The Frenchman enjoyed a stellar campaign during Solskjaer’s first full season in charge at Old Trafford, when the Norwegian sold Romelu Lukaku to make Martial his favoured centre forward.
Martial responded favourably, scoring 23 goals in 48 appearances as United finished third in the Premier League.
However, Martial’s form plumetted last season as the former Monaco ace lost his spot to Edinson Cavani and he managed just seven goals in 36 appearances in all competitions.
Martial did enjoy spells of good form, most notably his performance against Manchester City at the Etihad in a 2-0 win.
It came at a time when Cavani was injured and Solskjaer’s staff felt it was the perfect opportunity for Martial to kick on and spearhead the attack for the remainder of the campaign.
But Cavani won his place back for the final stretch of the season as old gripes with Martial surfaced again, particularly with the Frenchman’s reluctance to press the opposition and his lack of hold-up play.
Nevertheless, the Athletic claim United are still determined to get Martial back on track and feel that the 25-year-old still has plenty to offer at the Theatre of Dreams.
