Manchester United are in contact with the agent of Julian Alvarez but want to sell Anthony Martial before striking a deal, reports say. The River Plate star was fantastic in 2021, scoring 20 goals and clocking up 12 assists. However, a January move isn’t guaranteed at the current moment in time.

Manchester United clearly need more reinforcements, especially in the wake of their 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Monday night.

And Alvarez appears to be in their sights having dazzled for River Plate in Argentina over the past year.

The 21-year-old’s record of 32 goal involvements has seen him linked with the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, while he’s also drawn comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yet United seem to be frontrunners at the current moment in time.

Now, journalist Alfredo Pedulla has claimed the Red Devils want to sign Alvarez having met with his agent, Fernando Hidalgo.

But any move for the young Argentine will hinge on what happens with Martial.

Pedulla said on Twitter: “Contact between #Hidalgo and #ManUnited for Julian #Alvarez but Red Devils want ro to sell #Martial before.

“#Inter, #Milan and #Fiorentina are looking the situation, now on standby.”

Martial has struggled for United over the years, having once been considered their big hope for the future.

He arrived from Monaco in 2015 when Louis van Gaal ruled the roost, with the club previously losing Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao.

Martial initially did well, scoring 17 goals in his maiden campaign at Old Trafford.

The Frenchman also bagged 23 goals across all competitions in the 2019/2020 season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, ever since, the 26-year-old has regressed by netting just eight times.

Ralf Rangnick recently indicated he was willing to let the forward go – yet only if the terms of an exit were right for the club.

“He made it very clear that he wants to leave and in a way, I can understand his wish to leave and try to play more regularly somewhere else,” said the German.

“But again, here, it is not only about what he wants to do but also a question of which kind of clubs are interested in him and do they meet the demands of the club? We have to wait and see.

“He is not injured currently, so I decided to go with this group of players that we had in the squad today.

“It had nothing to do with injuries.”

Newcastle are one of the clubs interested in Martial as they look to stay in the Premier League.

Barcelona have been linked, too, especially with Memphis Depay failing to live up to expectations.

Sevilla and Lyon are also in the race to land the player, who will want to go to the World Cup with France later in the year.

And whether United are able to find a buyer for the forward remains to be seen.

Regarding Alvarez, the player recently spoke out on his future.

And he kept his cards close to his chest, insisting he was only focused on River Plate for the time being.

“Frankly, I don’t know what will happen, now I’m only thinking about celebrating,” he said.

“In January we will see.

“We all know how much the World Cup means for a player.

“When I make my decision I’ll choose what’s best for me.”
