Jamie Carragher has fallen in love with Alexander Isak and in the view of the Sky Sports pundit, the Newcastle frontman would have been the perfect signing for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. The 23-year-old joined the Magpies last summer in a £63million deal from Real Sociedad.
After a slow start on Tyneside that has been interrupted by injuries, Isak is now finally starting to show his quality under Eddie Howe.
Isak has been integral to Newcastle’s impressive recent Premier League form after three successive victories and Carragher is adamant United should have considered a swoop for the forward.
Carragher said on Monday Night Football: “I love him. I love watching him play. I mean Manchester United need a centre forward and you look at him, I think he’d actually be fantastic for Manchester United.
“They could have got him at the start of the season, but for me, since seeing him in his first appearance at Anfield he looked outstanding, he looked electric.
Neville ducks Ronaldo Man Utd question as Carragher grills MNF pundit [LATEST]
“Highlighting his body shape, he doesn’t just press the goalkeeper, it goes this side and this leads to the goal. Anybody that tells you now that centre forward play is all about scoring goals is just living in a dream world – this is what centre forwards have to do.”
Carragher continued to lavish Isak in praise, claiming Newcastle now have a special centre-forward on their hands.
“That goal is all down to him, now he doesn’t get the goal, he doesn’t get the assist, but the most important player in that game going one nil was Alexander Isak,” he added, talking about Newcastle’s opener against United.
“I absolutely love him and since he came on at half-time in the cup final he’s been Newcastle’s main centre forward. He’s taken over from Callum Wilson, that’s not going to change and I think Newcastle have got a special, special centre forward.”

It was previously reported in Spain last summer that Isak ‘refused to join United’ despite a substantial offer from the Red Devils.
The former Borussia Dortmund striker made a real name for himself in the Basque Country, hitting 17 goals in 34 matches in the 2020/21 season.
Isak scored just six La Liga goals last term however but that wasn’t enough to put Newcastle off a big-money transfer.
The Sweden international has already matched that tally in just 11 Premier League appearances having spent several months of the season on the sidelines through injury.
His manager Eddie Howe has been very complimentary of the striker and cannot wait to see how he develops under his tutelage.
“He’s got himself into a really good place. He’s getting fitter every game and his ability has never been in question for us. He’s got raw talent,” Howe said of Isak, who has moved ahead of Callum Wilson in the Newcastle pecking order.
“He has a brilliant way about him off the pitch and on the pitch he’s electric and a really exciting player.
“He complements what we have and the players are excited to play with him. I’m really excited about the future for him and it’s just the start.”
