Manchester United’s condundrum up front has rumbled on for some time, with Anthony Martial failing to deliver the goods last season before Edinson Cavani stepped in. Erling Haaland has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but there could already be a solution in place at the club.
Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he agrees with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about Mason Greenwood’s development at Manchester United.
Teenage forward Greenwood started up front in the 5-1 win over Leeds on Saturday, scoring once in the thrashing.
The England international looks set to play a more important role this season, potentially spending most of his time in the no. 9 role, with Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial also vying for that spot.
United had been linked with a big-money move for a striker such as Erling Haaland or Harry Kane, but those rumours have slowed in recent weeks.

Still only 19, plenty of pressure has been put on Greenwood’s shoulders, which seem to have gotten bigger over the summer.
And Red Devils legend Ferdinand reckons Greenwood is turning into the player he has hinted he can become, even drawing a comparison with Wayne Rooney.
“I saw some of the stuff in that game where I know some of the coaches and people behind the scenes at Man United are saying this isn’t a surprise,” he explained on his FIVE YouTube channel.

“It has just been waiting to happen in the first team and his body is catching up.
“He knows what he needs to do, but Wayne Rooney when he came into the first team was a man already.”
Ferdinand went on: “You can see with Mason Greenwood he has built into that frame of being a first team player and at the weekend, Graeme Souness [who praised him on Sky Sports] was right, he was one of the stand-out players.
“Some of the movement, the ball retention, shrugging people off and the finish was a joke.”
Solskjaer waxed lyrical about Greenwood’s physical development, describing him as a “man” and praising his mental improvements.
“I think you can see the benefit in his… I think you can see how much work he has put down this pre-season in his summer,” Solskjaer said. “He’s turned into a man.
“He’s filling out, he’s stronger. His stride is stronger – you know, when he ran away from the defender and scored his goal, it was a joy to see.
“His approach, attitude, application, everything he has done every day has been just better and better and I think that’s maturity as well in the kid.”
