Manchester United’s scouts are set to continue tracking Porto’s impressive goalkeeper Diogo Costa and energetic Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong in the coming weeks before the World Cup. The highly-rated young duo have attracted strong interest from the Red Devils, whose scouting department is now set to intensify their studies of both players before the January transfer window.

A new goalkeeper is potentially on the agenda for United with David de Gea now in the final year of his current deal at Old Trafford, although an extension is not yet being ruled out.

The Spaniard’s future remains unclear as Erik ten Hag ponders the prospect of shaking up his options between the sticks.

Despite some very credible performances this season, De Gea’s career reached a new low when it emerged that he was left out of Luis Enrique’s provisional 55-man Spain squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

And if United are to sign a replacement, Costa is understood to be among the names in the frame alongside Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simon.

United have been tracking Costa in recent weeks and he made quite the impression earlier this week when he saved two penalties in one Champions League match against Club Brugge.

Costa now has five penalties saves this month alone and per Opta data, he is the first goalkeeper to ever save three penalties in one Champions League campaign.

Frimpong is also making waves in the Bundesliga having previously spent time with both Celtic and Manchester City in the UK.

The talented 21-year-old has five goals and two assists in 17 outings this season and is continuing to develop at a frightening rate under new head coach Xabi Alonso.

United need some extra reinforcements at right-back with Aaron Wan-Bissaka failing to provide firm competition for Diogo Dalot.

Dalot is out of contract at the end of the season and is expected to extend his stay but with Barcelona lingering, his future is not necessarily set in stone.

Wan-Bissaka looks poised to move on and should that be the case, United will need to bring in another competitor for the shirt.

Frimpong is rated really highly by United’s recruitment department, who are set to continue watching him closely before the mid-season break

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has been full of praise for his £11million signing, declaring: “He’s technically strong, incredibly fast and is an attack-minded player. He has huge potential.”

United are expected to hand Ten Hag more cash to spend in January despite an excessive summer spree.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future could also help shape their plans for the winter market – particularly if the Portuguese decides he wants to move on.

Should that be the case, United are then more than likely to pursue the signing of a replacement forward.
