Manchester United are huge admirers of Brighton's highly-rated defender Ben White, who is also linked with a move to Liverpool.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has entered another period of pressure after crashing out of the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Needing just a point, the Red Devils were beaten by RB Leipzig 3-2 in Germany and will not ply their trade in the Europa League.
The defeat badly exposed some areas of the squad, none more than in defence.
Harry Maguire was slated for failing to deal with Justin Kluivert's effort for the third goal while Victor Lindelof was pulled easily out of position.
United had looked at centre-backs in the transfer window but went without.
But they are prepared to revisit that decision and have a number of targets in mind, including Brighton star White.
The Englishman enjoyed a brilliant campaign with Leeds United last season, playing every Championship minute as they got promoted to the Premier League.
And this year, he has starred at the back for Brighton – though they are struggling under Graham Potter.
But that has detracted the suitors as the 23-year-old continues to impress scouts across the country.
The Manchester Evening News reports that United are one of those to take a closer look and are huge admirers of the defender.
They are not the only team interested, though, with Liverpool also keen as a result of their extensive injuries.
Their preferred pairing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are likely out for the remainder of the season as they push to defend their Premier League crown.
Brighton remain determined to keep hold of White, though may be forced into a summer sale depending on the price, the MEN report.
And Potter has insisted the youngster is unfazed by the interest surrounding him, saying: "I have no worries about Ben getting his head turned at all.
"He is a level-headed guy that wants to play football.
"Of course he wants to play football at the highest level, just like you want all your players to have those ambitions.
"But he gets his head down and gets on with his work and he was totally professional in summer, despite the noise from outside which you can't control."
