Anthony Martial had been searching for a way to repay Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith with goals for Manchester United this season but to no avail.
The Frenchman had been yet to find the net in the Premier League in his previous four appearances this season, although he had spent just 98 minutes on the pitch in total.
His run without a goal had stretched all the way back to his double in the 9-0 thrashing of Southampton back in February.
But Solskjaer insisted the Frenchman would rediscover his goalscoring touch earlier this month after starting him against Southampton.
“Anthony has looked sharp and he looked sharp when he came on and he looked sharp in the game we played against Burnley in the week, and he played well against these at Old Trafford last season,” he said.
And after some below-par displays from his Man United attackers in recent weeks, Solskjaer recalled Martial to the starting XI for the crunch clash against Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The Norwegian decided to leave star names such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba on the bench as part of five changes from the 2-1 win over Villarreal.
And finally, his encouragement of Martial worked in United’s favour.
The 26-year-old cut in from the left-hand side after being found by Bruno Fernandes and smashed his effort past Jordan Pickford into the roof of the net.
That goal had came arguably when Everton were enjoying their best spell of the game and the relief on Martial’s face was evident.

After a string of poor displays in front of goal, Martial looked back to his best — and eagle-eyed United fans have theorised that the France international has a secret to finding his best form.
A number of fans took to social media to point out that Martial, a fan of wearing black gloves with a short-sleeved jersey, is much more potent in front of goal with his favoured accessories.
One United fan tweeted: "Football is quite a simple game: play Martial, get him to wear black gloves and you will win."
Another Twitter user agreed with the theory, adding: "Martial better be wearing the black gloves every time he plays."
And to no one’s surprise, Martial was spotted with his lucky hand-warmers when celebrating the goal.
The former Monaco man was forced off with a suspected injury midway through the second half as Solskjaer sent on Ronaldo and Pogba.
But despite having their star-studded members on the pitch for the closing stages of the game, United were pegged back by the resilient Toffees as Andros Townsend fired home to make it 1-1.
Solskjaer, who has come under pressure recently after defeats to Young Boys and West Ham, saw his side given a reprieve when Yerry Mina’s strike was chalked off by VAR for offside.
Despite his side’s best efforts, they were unable to find the winning goal to make it just two wins in their last five matches in all competitions.
