Man Utd considering completely demolishing Old Trafford to build it from scratch

Manchester United will consider demolishing Old Trafford so that they can build a new mega-stadium on the site of their 112-year home.

The remarkable plot stems from the Red Devils planning a major revamp of the Theatre of Dreams, which would see the capacity increased to over 80,000 spectators.

There are several proposals being considered to modernise the stadium but the Daily Mail report that the flattening of Man United's famous ground is a real possibility.

Bulldozing one of England's most historic football arenas would undoubtedly cause major controversy.

But the United hierarchy are under pressure to modernise Old Trafford following the upgraded arenas at Tottenham and Arsenal in recent years.

Though the plan to demolish the UK's largest football stadium is just one of three potential options under scrutiny and the other two are far less drastic.

The report claims that another idea is to increase the south stand up and over the railway line that runs behind it.

A similar proposal had been discussed in previous years but was ruled out as moving the adjoining railway was deemed too problematic.

Yet current building technology would enable the railway line to be bypassed.

An additional alternative would leave the stadium structurally intact whilst conducting a full revamp of spectator and hospitality areas in every stand.

United have promised that supporters will be consulted throughout the entire process of modernising Old Trafford.

Chief operating officer Collette Roche told a fans' forum in December that several options were being considered.

"These meetings have produced exciting potential ideas, although it's important to note that we're still at an early stage and it's premature to talk about timetables," said Roche.
