Man Utd ‘closing in on Kieran Trippier’ as part of £68million double deal

Manchester United are reportedly set to complete a double defensive swoop for Kieran Trippier and Raphael Varane in the summer transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already bolstered his attack at Old Trafford after United finally agreed a £73million deal with Borussia Dortmund to sign England winger Jadon Sancho.

And now the Red Devils boss is keen to strengthen at the back, too, with Trippier and Varane understood to be his top two defensive targets.

According to The Sun, deals for both players are on the verge of completion and could even be announced towards the end of next week.

United are expected to fork out £50million to prise Varane away from Real Madrid, despite the France international recently entering the final year of his Los Blancos contract.

Meanwhile Trippier, who is eyeing up a return to England after two successful years with Atletico Madrid, is believed to be close to an £18million switch to United.

Should they go through as anticipated, and Sancho pass his medical, all three signings will take United's transfer spend to £141million already this summer.

Varane is poised to sign a five-year contract with the Premier League club, who have managed to lower Real's initial £60million asking price after weeks of negotiations.

After seeing Sergio Ramos leave on a free transfer and join Paris St-Germain earlier this month, Los Blancos were desperate to cash in on the 28-year-old and raise funds for their own summer business.

At the age of 30, Trippier will not be putting pen to paper on as lengthy a deal as Varane at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer set his sights on a move for the ex-Tottenham star to provide competition for first-choice right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

It is believed he could also shift Wan-Bissaka inside as part of a three-man defence, with Trippier then able to operate at right wing-back.
