Man Utd chief Ed Woodward set to miss out on another transfer target

Man Utd: Was Solskjaer right to start Pogba in derby?

Hakan Calhanoglu is set to end speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United by signing a new deal with AC Milan. The Turkey international has been mooted as a potential option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with his contract at the San Siro expiring at the end of the season.

It had been reported that Old Trafford bosses could look to sign the attacking midfielder on a pre-contract agreement in the January window.

However, Tuttosport (via Football Italia) claim that Calhanoglu’s representatives will meet with Milan bosses on Wednesday, with hopes of completing negotiations.

The report suggests he will be given a bumper new deal worth €4.5million-per-year, a significant reduction on the €6m it was believed he was holding out for.

Milan are top of Serie A currently, with Calhanoglu playing a key role, scoring five goals and registering five assists.

Solskjaer has hinted that United could have a quieter January window, with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic still being felt.

“It’s hard to predict how other teams (will act) and how the financial situation is,” he said last month.

“If teams need to sell or if they’ve got money to buy…

“I don’t predict a lot of ins and outs, to be fair,” he added.  “The world, financially, and in football, has changed as well also.

“It depends how the injury situations are at different teams. I feel very happy with my squad at the moment. We’re getting stronger.

“I still have issues every week when we only get an 18-man squad to pick from.

“Who do you leave out? I feel I’m in a good position.”

One signing that could be on the cards however, is Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier.

Solskjaer is understood to be interested in adding more options behind first choice right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The signing of Alex Telles in the summer has helped Luke Shaw rediscover his form, with the left-back putting in his strongest performance of the season in the draw with Manchester City.

The United boss could now look for a similar impact on Wan-Bissaka’s game, with the ex-Crystal Palace man suffering from some defensive lapses in recent weeks.

The Manchester Evening News report that England international Tripper is open to a move to Old Trafford, to play for the team he supported as a boy.

Atleti boss Diego Simeone may need some convincing though. The Argentinian has played Trippier in every game this season, with the ex-Tottenham man playing every minute of their encouraging La Liga campaign.

Reports had claimed that the Spanish giants would accept a bid in the region of £20m in January, but that may have now changed after a bright start to the season.
