Man Utd chief Ed Woodward free to sign £63m Kalidou Koulibaly ahead of Liverpool and PSG

Manchester United have been linked with a transfer raid for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly this summer and Ed Woodward now has a clear path to signing the Senegal international, according to reports.

Koulibaly is in huge demand and is expected to leave Serie A this summer.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been linked with the centre-back as well as frontrunners United and PSG.

French newspaper Le Parisien claim PSG have now pulled the plug on any move for Koulibaly this summer though.

The belief of the French champions is the £63million Napoli are demanding for the 28-year-old is too much.

That means Ed Woodward and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now have a free run to sign Koulibaly who is widely regarded as one of the most impressive defenders in world football.

The powerhouse has made a mammoth 233 appearances for Napoli but is ready for a new challenge as he is in the prime of his career.

Meanwhile, ESPN pundit Craig Burley recently called on United to beat Liverpool to Koulibaly’s signature.

“Look, is Koulibaly a great get for most clubs? Absolutely, fantastic centre-half,” Burley said.

“He’s going to be 29 this summer, in a month or so, there’s the financial situation in terms of getting the player in and their wages, and Man United’s need is more.

“They’ve got a good centre-half in Maguire and then they’ve got a couple of other centre-halves that I’m sure they would like to get rid of, and if they could bring a player in they would.

“Liverpool have Matip, they have Lovren and they have Joe Gomez, who is an excellent young player.

“None of them to the standard of Koulibaly but they’ve already got arguably the world’s greatest defender in Virgil van Dijk.

“So their need for another centre-half is not desperation.

“So they’ve got other places in the team they would need to look.

“I would be surprised if Liverpool went out and shelled big money on another centre-half when they can spend big money on other places in the team, for the reason that I explained.”

United are expected to be busy in the summer transfer window with the likes of Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish also linked.

The Red Devils currently sit fifth in the Premier League and will be desperate to overturn Chelsea in fourth if the season restarts.

All football in England is currently suspended due to the global coronavirus pandemic.
