Man Utd boss Solskjaer ordered to hand in resignation after Southampton ‘shambles’

Manchester United fans were left fuming at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after seeing their side fall to a 2-0 deficit heading into half-time against Southampton. The Red Devils were in good form heading into the match on Sunday having won three consecutive matches.

A win over Southampton could have seen United jump up to sixth in the table and with a game in hand on most of their rivals.

Solskjaer was forced to rethink his starting line-up in the morning after Anthony Martial fell ill over night having travelled down with the squad.

Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford were tasked with leading the line with Bruno Fernandes sitting in just behind them.

Donny van de Beek was given his first start in the Premier League with Nemanja Matic and Fred also making up the midfield positions.

But they were coming up against a Southampton in fine form and the south coast club got off to a fast start.

James Ward-Prowse whipped in a teasing corner where Jan Bednarek raced in to nod past De Gea.

And Ward-Prowse soon bagged his fourth goal of the season with an inch-perfect free-kick, which saw the United goalkeeper clatter with the post.

United pushed to try and halve the deficit before the break, but Southampton’s defence stood strong.

And the first-half performance didn’t go down well with United fans, with some calling for Solskjaer to leave.

One fan demanded: “This is a shambles I want ole to hand in his request to leave the club by tomorrow mate.”

Another wrote: “We are getting battered. How much longer will the bus rebuild and circus continue?”

A third simply tweeted: “Ole out.”

A fourth said: “The most inconsistent team of all time.”
