Manchester United reportedly have a list of 12 players who earn more than interim head coach Ralf Rangnick. It shows that a tradition imposed by legendary former boss Sir Alex Ferguson is now long in the past.

New boss Rangnick has been appointed on a deal until the end of the season. He will then take up a consultancy role within the Old Trafford hierarchy for a further two years.

The 63-year-old has got off to a positive start. Last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace earned three valuable Premier League points.

United then drew 1-1 with Young Boys on Wednesday and while Rangnick might have preferred a victory, he was able to cast his eye over a couple of the club’s best academy talents.

The Red Devils ended the game with youngsters Teden Mengi, Charlie Savage, Shola Shoretire and Zidan Iqbal on the pitch.

And it might be one of the few times when Rangnick actually earns more than the players he has on the pitch.

According to the Daily Mail, as many as 12 of United’s first-team stars rake in a bigger paycheque than the German.

It is no surprise that Cristiano Ronaldo is the club’s highest earner. Upon his return to Old Trafford, he is believed to have signed a deal worth around £510,000 per week.

That makes the Portuguese the highest-paid player in the club’s and in Premier League history.

Goalkeeper David De Gea was long United’s best-paid player. His 2019 contract extension sees him now take home £375,000 per week.

Summer arrivals Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane are reported to earn £350,000 and £340,000 respectively. Paul Pogba, who is out of contract in the summer, is just behind on £290,000.

Comparatively, Bruno Fernandes earns a lot less than other important players in the United squad – despite still earning more than Rangnick. The Red Devils apparently pay the midfielder £180,000.

Also earning more than Rangnick are Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani.

The United squad’s astronomical cumulative salary sees the club continue to ditch the strict wage structure that Ferguson imposed.

The legendary Scot ensured he was paid more than his players in a bid to assert power over his squad. That was ruined when Wayne Rooney signed a new reported £300,000 per week deal in 2010, but Ferguson still managed to land a big pay rise from the club’s owners in the aftermath.

“When the Glazers and David Gill agreed to a big increase in Wayne Rooney’s salary in 2010, they wanted to know how I felt,” Ferguson wrote in his 2015 book, Leading.

“I did not think it fair that Rooney should earn twice what I made and Joel Glazer immediately said: ‘I totally agree with you but what should we do?’

“It was simple. We just agreed that no player should be paid more than me. We agreed in less time than it takes to read the previous sentence.”
