Manchester United have ‘accelerated contacts’ for Monaco star Vanderson despite Erik ten Hag preferring for the club to sign Sergino Dest, according to reports. The Red Devils want to land a new right-back at a time where Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams have been deemed surplus to requirements. And they’re taking action behind the scenes as the close of the summer transfer window edges closer.

Manchester United are keen to land a new right-back.

Wan-Bissaka is free to find a new club before the transfer window shuts on September 1, with the former Crystal Palace star struggling for consistency during his time at Old Trafford.

Williams has also been put up for sale, while United know they need more than Diogo Dalot if they’re to bounce back from last season’s shambolic campaign under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

Now, according to Sport, United have ‘accelerated contacts’ as they look to sign Vanderson from Monaco.

And that’s despite Ten Hag imploring them to sign Dest from Barcelona, having previously managed the USA international at Ajax in the Netherlands.

Barcelona have been hoping to sell Dest to the Red Devils as they look to balance their finances, having yet to register Jules Kounde.

But United are now said to be ‘prioritising’ Vanderson instead.

United had previously asked Monaco to be kept informed about the 21-year-old, who scored twice and registered one assist from 17 Ligue 1 matches last term.

And there are ‘more and more internal voices’ at Old Trafford who would prefer to sign the Brazilian at Dest’s expense.

Barcelona have also been in contact with Monaco about the players, having ‘encountered difficulties’ in their attempts to prise Thomas Meunier from Borussia Dortmund.

Monaco, for their part, are yet to receive a firm offer for the player.

And whether United are able to sign Vanderson before the summer transfer window shuts at the beginning of next month is something only time will tell.

The Red Devils would also like to recruit a back-up goalkeeper to provide competition for David De Gea, who has struggled during matches against Brighton and Brentford so far this term.

And they want a new forward, too, with links to Antony, Cody Gakpo, Christian Pulisic and Yannick Carrasco all arising in recent days.

One player United are set to sign, however, is Casemiro.

The Brazil international is set to arrive from Real Madrid, with the Red Devils agreeing to pay a huge £60million in order to recruit the Brazil international.

Casemiro had previously hoped to end his career at the Bernabeu, where he’s won five Champions League titles over the course of his glittering career.

But he’ll now be moving to United instead, having agreed to pen a four-year contract with an option of a further year.

While many at United are jubilant about the deal for Casemiro, however, Jamie Carragher thinks the Red Devils’ refusal to land Adrien Rabiot is ‘embarrassing’.

Prior to pursuing Casemiro, the fallen Premier League giants had been eyeing the Juventus star.

Ultimately, though, they walked away because they deemed Rabiot’s demands to be too high.

And Carragher said: “If you are a club like United, you should not be pulling out of transfers — after agreeing a fee with the selling team — due to wage demands.

“Someone at the club should already know what sort of salary the player wants, long before it reaches this point.

“They have also spent weeks chasing Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, and now they are running around trying to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid.

“From De Jong, to Rabiot, to Casemiro. They are all different players with different styles and ages. What is the plan here? Where is the strategy? It is embarrassing.

“Erik ten Hag will want his own players, of course, and so far this summer United have backed him in the moves for Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia.

“I understand that, because it is hard to say no to a new manager when he has just been appointed, but the desperation at this stage of the transfer window is another sign of the problems within the club.

“It is like watching Supermarket Sweep.”
