Man City fans take just six minutes to mock rivals Man Utd and Michael Carrick

Manchester City fans mocked rivals Manchester United for their current managerial predicament just six minutes into their Premier League clash against Everton on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola's side were looking to close the gap on league leaders Chelsea by seeing off Rafa Benitez and his team – but supporters briefly had their concentration elsewhere.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being sacked by United chiefs following their dismal showing in the 4-1 defeat at Watford on Saturday, City fans came up with a new chant.

"Carrick's at the wheel" could be heard ringing around the Etihad after United confirmed that their former midfielder will take charge while the club look for an interim boss until the end of the season.

Many United fans felt the need to hit back on social media having been annoyed at the remix of Rio Ferdinand's favourite Ole's at the wheel offering back in 2019.

One Twitter user wrote: "Ironic them singing about someone at the wheel when they can't even fill a stadium up on a premier league game."

With a second saying: "What? All 5 of them?"

And a third bemoaning: "When will it stop….."

Guardiola said in October that he had sympathy for Solskjaer in his role at United because he felt similar pressure during his time at Barcelona.

He said: "At United, everything that happens is doubled.

"The influence of them, like Liverpool, they are the greatest teams in England for many years. When it happens, their victories are double, defeats are double, of course, it’s not a surprise."

Adding: "I’m saying the most obvious things that everyone knows. And in that moment that it happened I’m pretty sure Ole is surrounded by people, family, the staff to be close to them and try to win the next game. There are no more secrets than that."

The official United statement reads: "Manchester United announces that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left his role as manager. Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision.

While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.

"Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as Manager and our very best wishes for the future. His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a Manager who gave us many great moments.

"He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family."
