Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has launched an X-rated tirade after he felt sections of the media had misinterpreted his comments about this weekend’s derby with Manchester United. Guardiola takes his team to Old Trafford on Saturday in search of their seventh win of the season.

City thrashed Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday night to move one step closer to qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.

Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus were all on the scoresheet at the Etihad Stadium as the Citizens ran out 4-1 winners against the Belgians.

On Tuesday, Guardiola had claimed that City’s European encounter was ‘much more important than the United game’.

But after the final whistle, the 50-year-old insisted his attentions are always focused on his side’s next game.

“The people taking the p*** for me for saying today is more important,” Guardiola hissed. “Now the important one is United.

“For me today was really important. [There are] 28 games left in the Prem – 28 and here just six to qualify. And this is incredibly important.

“Everyone saying, ‘Pep is talking bulls***’, I wasn’t. This was so important. Hopefully [we’ll be] in the last 16 with the best teams in Europe.”

“I don’t know if you saw West Ham away [in the Carabao Cup] but I prepared like you can’t imagine. We played like a great team – we lost on penalties. The only disaster is losing a game.

“Every game, my focus is the next one, never the second one.

City’s win against Club Brugge put them in the driving seat at the top of the Group A table after Paris Saint-Germain were held to a 2-2 draw with RB Leipzig.

The Citizens are now one point ahead of the Ligue 1 side and five points ahead of RB Leipzig, who occupy third spot.

City will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side after they suffered a shock 2-0 loss at home to Crystal Palace last weekend.

That defeat was City’s second in the top-flight this season after they were defeated by Tottenham on the opening weekend of the campaign.

But they will face a tough task across Manchester as Solskjaer knows his job is at stake if he can’t secure a big derby day result.
