Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones will miss their Premier League season opener against Fulham after suffering a calf injury this week.

The Merseyside club are awaiting specialist opinion on the injury which could leave the 21-year-old sidelined for between two to four weeks.

The injury comes as a massive blow for Jurgen Klopp, who only recently announced that he will be without fellow midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for the foreseeable future.

Jones came off the bench during their 3-1 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday – but was pictured in a protective boot during the team’s final pre-season game against Strasbourg just one day later, according to The Athletic.

Once a specialist has analysed the injury, the club will have a greater understanding on the duration of time he’ll be out for – which they hope will be closer to two weeks.

The England man made 15 Premier League appearances for the Reds last year and contributed one goal and one assist in the top flight.

Luckily for Klopp, Jones’ injury does not seem as serious as Oxlade-Chamberlain’s hamstring problem that he is currently dealing with.

The 28-year-old was forced off during the first half of the Reds’ 2-0 friendly win over Crystal Palace in Singapore earlier last month.

It comes as a major blow for the former Arsenal man as he enters the final year of his contract at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side travel to Craven Cottage on Saturday to kick-start their league season before hosting Crystal Palace a week later.
