Liverpool reportedly failed with a megabid for Juventus star Federico Chiesa, who is now a transfer target for Newcastle United. Cheisa has become a key player for Juve this season, having won Euro 2020 with Italy in the summer.

The 23-year-old was linked with a move to Anfield throughout the summer window as Jurgen Klopp sought to boost the Reds’ misfiring attack.

Klopp had seen his Liverpool side deliver their worst season in front of goal since his first campaign in charge.

With Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane struggling for form, Liverpool were forced to rely on Mohamed Salah for goals.

As a result, Klopp hoped to turn to the transfer market in an attempt to improve their troubling form.

Chiesa scored 15 goals and notched 11 assists despite what was ultimately a disappointing season for Juve last term.

He continued that form at this summer’s Euros, scoring twice as Italy won their first major tournament since the 2006 World Cup.

With Chiesa impressing for both club and country, the 23-year-old quickly moved to the top of Klopp’s list of targets.

But the attacker had only spent one season with Juve having joined from Fiorentina on a two-year loan deal which contained a £40million obligation to buy.

As a result, Liverpool were forced to gear up to submit a megabid in order to lure him away from the Allianz Stadium.

According to Il Giornale, both the Reds and Bayern Munich offered a fee in the region of £67m to £85m.

Juve accepted neither of those advances though, with Chiesa instead staying in Turin as Max Allegri replaced Andrea Pirlo.

He has become a key player for Allegri, scoring the winning goal against Chelsea in the Champions League.

It is stated that Juventus now want to secure his future “definitively” amid the interest from Liverpool and Bayern.

But that duo have now been joined in the race to sign the Italian by Newcastle, who have been taken over by the mega-rich Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

The Magpies are set to undergo a similar transformation to Manchester City, with a number of stars linked with a move to St James’ Park.

With Chiesa continuing to impress, his name has now joined the list of many who are thought to be being eyed by Newcastle.

It is a move the now cash-rich Premier League side can easily afford, with Il Giornale reporting his salary demands would be “guaranteed” by a move to the Magpies.
