Liverpool urged to re-sign "creative genius" Coutinho in cut-price transfer

Liverpool have been urged to bring “creative genius” Philippe Coutinho back to Anfield by club legend Phil Thompson.

The Brazilian left Anfield in January 2018 when he sealed his dream big-money move to Barcelona.

But Coutinho, signed for a fee potentially rising to £142million as the long-term replacement for Andres Iniesta, struggled to make his mark at Camp Nou.

After 18 months, he was allowed to exit last summer, joining Bayern Munich on a season-long loan.

Bayern paid £15million to take him on loan for the year, with a purchase option of £105million.

Coutinho has again struggled to consistently show his best form however and Bayern are set to send him back to Catalunya when the season finishes – a date still in question due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Barcelona, amid their own financial issues, are keen to offload the 27 year-old, but are unlikely to recoup anything like their outlay.

Indeed, given the current uncertain financial situation facing a number of clubs, they will likely be forced into settling for another loan move for a fee in the region of £10million, with the hope that he can impress and secure a potential £60million transfer in 2021; for Barcelona right now, that is their best case scenario.

Tottenham are among those who have been keeping tabs on Coutinho's situation, while Manchester United touched base with representatives over his availability too.

Last week, Coutinho’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, stated that his client would be interested in a return to the Premier League.

“The Premier League is something that he has always enjoyed playing in, and loved playing in, and would probably love to come back and play in.”

Liverpool are unlikely to be tempted into a move, with Jurgen Klopp having seen his side reach new heights since Coutinho’s departure.

Although the German holds Coutinho in high regard, Mirror Sport understands he has “zero interest” in a reunion.

But Thompson, speaking to Sky Sports News, insists he would bring Coutinho back “in a heartbeat”.

Thompson said: "They are probably looking at that creative midfield player.

“Would you take Coutinho back? I would, in a heartbeat. I think he's a creative genius.
