Liverpool star spotted training alone in Sefton Park amid coronavirus suspension

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has asked his players to keep their fitness levels up from home after the coronavirus saw all activity shutdown at Melwood earlier this week. The Reds have not played when they were dumped out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid, as they lost 3-2 at Anfield.

The players have instead been advised to isolate while making the most of home gyms as they await the completion of the Premier League season.

According to Football Insider, centre-back Joel Matip has been out and about to stay sharp.

The former Schalke man was spotted running in Sefton Park as he looks to tick over his fitness.

It’s a regular spot for the defender, who lives nearby and it’s not the first time he has made the most of the local area.

A search on Twitter shows that Matip has met several fans there before and he is often spotted jogging through the public park in the south of the city.

One Liverpool fan wrote on Twitter “Joel matip on Sefton park,” in response to the question “Where is the weirdest place you have ever met a footballer?”

While another posted in March: “Just saw Joel Matip on a run in sefton Park the big sexy coconut loving hero.”

Another said just two days later: “as if i just seen Joel Matip doing laps around sefton park ahahahahaha”

Liverpool cancel training for two weeks as Jurgen Klopp puts faith in WhatsApp group

At the start of his Liverpool career in September 2016, one man posted on Twitter: “Just had a lil nod off matip at the Sefton park food festival. Large chap him.”

It’s little wonder that Matip is a big fan of Sefton Park when it hosts one of the biggest free African music festivals: Africa Oye (pictured below with a fan).

Although he was born in Bochum in Germany, Matip represented Cameroon internationally between 2010 and 2015.

His father Jean Matip was also a footballer while his brother Marvin plays in Germany for FC Ingolstadt.

I even lost a member of staff for a while yesterday as he sprinted across Sefton Park to get a selfie with Joel Matip of Liverpool FC. Apologies Joel if he startled you!!

Matip is also the cousin of former Middlesbrough striker Joseph Job.

Klopp put an end to training at Melwood to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Liverpool were set to return to action against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on April 5, but that game has now been postponed with Premier League action not set to return until April 30 at the earliest.

It was a match that would have seen Liverpool crowned champions if they won the match but now they will require six points to seal the title.

The Reds are now scheduled to return against Arsenal on May 2 at the Emirates Stadium.

Klopp has put his trust in a WhatsApp group to help deliver messages to his players and staff during quarantine.

A decision will be made on their return to training in the coming weeks.
