Liverpool have been presented with another lifeline to make the blockbuster signing of Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman was strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid in a last-gasp move this summer, but PSG were in no mood to sell him.

Liverpool will be hoping that if they play their cards right they can still pull off an incredible deal for future Balon d’Or winner Mbappe.

The 2018 World Cup winner is out of contract at Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season, and this was their last chance to cash in on the attacker.

Real had a number of bids knocked back by PSG for Mbappe, strongly suggesting that they hope he will sign a new deal at the Parc des Princes.

But Europe’s top clubs will certainly be thinking otherwise, and may even be rubbing their hands at the fact they may have saved some serious cash to land the forward.

One of those who has seriously gained from PSG’s reluctance to sell is Liverpool, who would have been out of the race if Mbappe was being sold to the highest bidder.

Real’s final bid of £170m is money the Reds can only dream of, if Jurgen Klopp’s downcast verdict is to be believed.

But it may just be a case of freeing up some wage budget at Anfield with Mbappe set to be available for nothing in January on a pre-contract to foreign clubs.

The Transfer Window podcast has previously stated that Liverpool will mount a serious challenge for the player if he does become available on a free transfer.

Ian McGarry said: “We know that Liverpool want to sign a striker and we reported before that Mbappe was someone who had a mutual interest in joining Liverpool as well as Liverpool signing him.

“Our understanding is while they cannot necessarily afford under FSG’s management a transfer fee in the region of what Chelsea paid Romelu Lukaku which is around £98m, they certainly can afford a move for Mbappe under a freedom of contract when he will be out of his current deal with PSG.

“The wages will be very substantial. However, Mbappe is interested in making the move to Liverpool. It’s something which Jurgen Klopp has a central role in with regards to Mbappe’s respect and admiration for the German coach.”

Mbappe’s known affection for Real will certainly come into play if he does become available to interested parties.

But the capture of Cristiano Ronaldo by Manchester United has shown that the allure of the Premier League is still as present as ever.
