Liverpool look set to be left disappointed in their pursuit of RB Salzburg star Karim Adeyemi as Borussia Dortmund are reportedly eager to strike a deal for the striking prodigy.

The Reds have had their eye on Adeyemi all season after his impressive goalscoring exploits in the Austrian Bundesliga. The 19-year-old has struck 11 times in just 14 games; eclipsing his tally of seven goals from last year well before Christmas.

His impressive form has also seen him break into the German national team over the past few months, where he netted his first goal for Hansi Flick’s men back in September during the 6-0 World Cup qualifying win over Armenia.

His rapid progress over the past year has persuaded Liverpool, and a host of other European heavyweights, to make a move for the teenage hotshot.

But it seems as though Borussia Dortmund may pip everyone in the race according to journalist Fabrizio Romano – just as they did two years ago when they snapped up Erling Haaland.

The Bundesliga side fought off the likes of Manchester United to seal a deal with Salzburg for Haaland back in late 2019, and Romano hinted that history could be about to repeat itself with their interest in the youngster.

Dortmund’s impressive record of developing young talent into bonafide stars, such as Haaland, Jadon Sancho, and most recently Jude Bellingham, is likely to make them a very attractive proposition for Adeyemi.

Ironically, Adeyemi would be the replacement for Haaland if he does elect to make the jump to Germany.

Haaland’s incredible spell at Dortmund looks certain to end in the summer with a clutch of clubs waiting to swoop once a release clause in the Norwegian stars contract kicks in. That clause will enable Haaland to depart for a fee between £63million and £84m – almost half of the £135m that Dortmund reportedly quoted to interested clubs earlier this year.

And given the phenomenal success that Haaland has enjoyed since penning his deal at Dortmund, it’s not hard to see why Adeyemi could be enticed into taking a similar path; which would be a huge blow for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are in the market for attacking reinforcements with their potent front three not getting any younger.

Roberto Firmino has had injury issues this year, whilst Mohamed Salah’s contract saga rumbles on.

But they may have to re-evaluate their plans if they have all their hopes pinned on striking a deal for Adeyemi.
