Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp asking about Yves Bissouma as Arsenal transfer battle eyed

Transfer news: Latest on Bissouma, Ozil and Barkley

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has reportedly been asking questions about Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma, who has been eyed as a potential replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum. Bissouma, 24, is also said to be a target of Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Liverpool face the prospect of losing Wijnaldum for free at the end of the season.

The Holland international is out of contract in the summer and the Reds are yet to put an offer on the table that is deemed suitable by the 30-year-old.

Bissouma has become a key member of the Brighton side since his arrival in the summer of 2018.

And his performances have attracted the attention of those at Liverpool, with transfer expert Duncan Castles claiming the midfielder is on a list of players being targeted to replace Wijnaldum if he were to leave.

And manager Klopp has been doing his own work to find out more about the Mali international.

“If you look at Liverpool, it’s clear that Bissouma is being thought of as an option to replace Gini Wijnaldum if he leaves under freedom of contract at the end of the season,” Castles said on the Transfer Window podcast.

“A similar type of player, performs a similar type of role, much younger.

“You mentioned his statistical high rating at present, we know that’s one of the filters that Liverpool use before presenting names to Jurgen Klopp as options for new signings.

“My understanding is that Klopp has done some work to ask questions about Bissouma to people who know him well, which again would suggest that this is something that Liverpool have on a list of potential replacements.”

Wijnaldum has remained a regular in the Liverpool side this season despite speculation over his future.

And Castles says there is still a chance the former Newcastle star will put pen to paper on a new deal at Anfield.

He added: “Obviously they want to keep Wijnaldum and I think there is a good chance that eventually they will be able to secure a new deal for Wijnaldum.

“Again we’re talking about a COVID market, limited cash for these big contracts that players like Wijnaldum are looking for.

“Liverpool can say: ‘This is a place which has worked well for you, where you’re winning trophies, why change it?’.”
